CORONAVIRUS SYMPTOMS

Everyone is now asking questions about the coronavirus. How to recognize him? How to accurately understand that in this particular case we are talking about COVID-19, and not about the common cold? What to pay special attention to?

Fortunately, doctors have already accumulated sufficient experience in the observation of patients with COVID-19 to draw a classic picture of the course of the disease and identify the main differences from other similar infections.

Incubation period. From the moment of infection from an infectious patient to the onset of symptoms with coronavirus, it can be from several days to 14 days. However, longer periods were also noted - this behavior of the disease is observed if the virus was transmitted to a person from an infected animal. At the same time, WHO claims: it does not have reliable facts that domestic animals were sources of human infection.

Symptoms of COVID-19.

Severe course is in many ways similar to pneumonia or acute respiratory syndrome.
  • Weakness;
  • Muscle pain;
  • Strong headache;
  • Heaviness in the chest;
  • Shortness of breath, shortness of breath;
  • High temperature (always above 38 ° C);
  • Chills and fever;
  • Dry cough (if sputum goes away, then in a small amount);
  • Hemoptysis;
  • Loss of consciousness.

In a mild form, the disease looks like an ordinary cold. All of the above symptoms are much weaker, plus a sore throat and a slight runny nose can be observed.

As you can see, the signs of COVID-19 can be simultaneously taken for both the common cold and the flu. But there are still significant differences.

Similarities and differences between the symptoms of COVID-19 from SARS

Similarity. In both cases - with a mild course of COVID-19 and with acute respiratory viral infections, there is a slight temperature and severe headache.

Differences. With ARVI and colds, a runny nose and severe nasal congestion are always observed. With COVID-19, the lower respiratory tract is affected, and there is almost never a runny nose.

During acute respiratory viral infections and colds, a productive cough with sputum discharge. With COVID-19, the cough is always dry, and there is no or no sputum at all.

Similarities and differences between COVID-19 and influenza

Similarity. According to the latest information from WHO, the symptoms of COVID-19 and influenza are largely identical: both can cause respiratory diseases, which are almost asymptomatic or quite easy, and with a serious condition of the patient: up to death.

Differences. Influenza is almost always accompanied by high temperature. With COVID-19, the temperature can be either slightly increased (with a mild form) or very high.

With flu, there may be a strong cough, but shortness of breath and shortness of breath are never observed. In severe cases, COVID-19 is always accompanied by pain and heaviness in the chest, as well as breathing problems.

Personal experience of a German virologist

And here is what a virologist from Germany says in an interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, who observed the majority of cases of COVID-19 in this country. Based on the experience of Hendrick Streak, the average patient with the coronavirus COVID-19 transfers it in a mild form. Almost all found a frequent dry cough without sputum and fever. At the same time, about a third of patients complained of diarrhea. It turns out that, at least in Germany, this virus affected not only the lower respiratory tract, but also affected the gastrointestinal tract of those infected.

In addition, most - about 2/3 of the total number of cases - indicated that their sense of smell had sharply worsened and their taste sensations had decreased.
